How to stop running applications in the background when Microsoft Edge is closed

With new Microsoft Edge, extensions, applications, and other services may continue to run in the background even after the browser is closed. This means that Edge will continue to use computer resources. Here’s how to stop background processes.

What are background applications?

By default, Microsoft Edge allows background applications and extensions to run in the background on your computer. It allows extensions and applications that require 24/7 access to computer resources. However, if you have not installed any applications or extensions in the Edge, you may want to disable the browser’s ability to run after closing it.

If you’re trying to free up memory on a limited-resource computer or want to give your laptop a longer battery life, disabling this feature can reduce the impact that Edge has on your computer.

How to prevent Microsoft Edge from running in the background

If you are on Windows, you will see an Edge icon in the system tray; could be hidden behind the arrow icon. This is the indicator icon that shows that the Edge is still running in the background. Clicking on the icon will open a context menu that displays the applications or extensions currently running.

To see which applications are still running in the background in Windows, click the Edge icon in the system tray.

To temporarily close Microsoft Edge, click «Close Microsoft Edge.»

To temporarily close Edge, click "Close Microsoft Edge" in the menu.

The next time you open and then close Edge, it will continue to run in the background.

To completely disable the feature, click the «Let Microsoft Edge run in the background» option. If you continue to see the Edge icon in the system tray, this feature has not been disabled correctly.

Click

If you’re using your browser on a non-Windows operating system, launch Edge, click the three dots in the upper right corner, then select «Settings.»

Click the three dots and then "Settings."

From the Settings page, click «System» in the left pane, and then switch the «Continue running wallpapers when Microsoft Edge is closed» switch to the off position to disable the feature.

In the left pane, click "System" and switch "Continue running wallpapers when Microsoft Edge is closed" to the off position.

Alternatively, you can paste edge: // settings / system in the address bar and then press the Enter key to go directly to the settings.

If you want to reactivate Edge to run in the background, return to Settings> System and switch to «Continue running background applications when Microsoft Edge is closed» in the On position.

Whenever you close Edge after disabling this option, applications that previously continued to run in the background will terminate. It will also free up computer resources and should improve battery life.
