How to set a maximum frame rate in NVIDIA drivers

Why would you want to limit your FPS?

This feature is especially useful on Windows gaming laptops with NVIDIA hardware, as it can prevent your GPU from running as fast as possible. This will save battery power and reduce heat consumption, allowing you to play games longer when you are away from an electrical outlet.

You may also find the limit useful for reducing screen breakage in games. You can try setting the maximum FPS to frequency from Update of your screen if you don’t have one monitor activated for G-Sync or FreeSync with variable refresh rates. How to set a maximum FPS for all games

This feature is integrated into the NVIDIA control panel. To open it, right-click on the Windows desktop and select «NVIDIA Control Panel».

(If you don’t see this menu option, you probably don’t have NVIDIA drivers installed.)

Select «Manage 3D settings» under 3D settings on the left side of the NVIDIA Control Panel window.

To control the maximum frame rate for all applications on your computer, make sure the «Global settings» tab is selected.

In the list of settings, click the «Maximum frame rate» box on the right. By default, this option is disabled and there is no maximum frame rate.

To set a maximum frame rate, select «On» and choose the maximum frames per second (FPS).

Click «Apply» at the bottom of the window to save the settings.

How to control the maximum frame rate for certain games

You can also control the settings for the maximum frame rate for individual applications. Click the «Program Settings» tab at the top of the settings list. Under «Select a custom program,» choose the application you want to control.

If a game is not listed, you can click «Add» and specify its .exe file.

Find the «Maximum frame rate» option, click on it, and select the setting you want. By default, each game is set to «Use global settings»; will use the settings you choose on the Global Settings tab.

However, you can select different settings here. For example, you can leave the maximum frame option off in the «Global settings» tab and set a different maximum frame for each game that you want to limit. Or you can set a maximum frame rate worldwide and exempt individual games from the limit. Up to you.

Be sure to click «Apply» to save the settings.

If you don’t see this option, be sure to update your NVIDIA drivers. You can update your drivers in GeForce Experience application if you are installing or downloading the latest drivers from the NVIDIA website.
