How to fix black background error in Windows 7

Microsoft is no longer updating Windows 7But there is a problem: in the latest Windows 7 update, released on January 14, Microsoft introduced an error that can replace the desktop background with a blank black screen.

What the noticed Bleeping Computer, Microsoft says this error will be fixed, but only for paying organizations extensive security updates. If you’re a home user, it looks like Microsoft won’t fix this error for you. You are on your own. Home users can’t even pay for extended security updates. Fortunately, there is a way around the error.

Upgrade : Microsoft has I changed my mind. The company has released an update to address this issue on February 7, 2020. You can download KB4539602 from Microsoft to fix this error on your Windows 7 computer.

Don’t make Windows 7 «stretch» your background.

The error is in the «Stretch» background option. To avoid the black background error, you can select an alternative option, such as «Fill», «Wrap», «Plate» or «Center».

To do this, right-click on the desktop background and select «Customize». Click ‘Desktop Wallpaper’ and then select an alternate option from the drop-down box. Choose anything except «Stretch».

You can also simply choose a desktop background that matches your screen resolution. This is the best choice for image quality, as you will get an image that is properly sized for your screen. It will not stretch or explode.

For example, if you have a 1920 × 1080 screen, look for a desktop background with those sizes. Right-click on the desktop and select «Screen Resolution» to see the current screen resolution.

If you prefer to stretch the wallpaper of your choice, you can open your favorite desktop background in an image editor of your choice. Even Microsoft Paint, included in Windows 7, works.

Resize the image to fit the current screen resolution and save it. Set that new resized image as your desktop background. Windows 7 will not stretch it, so it will work normally and you will not see an empty black background.

Do not uninstall the Buggy update

We do not recommend uninstalling bug update KB4534310. This update contains important security fixes for Windows 7. It is better to avoid this error than to do without the crucial security fixes.

As long as you avoid the «Stretch» option, you will not experience the black background error. However, stretching is detrimental to image quality.

In Windows 7, black wallpaper can also be the result of using a copy of Windows 7 that «It’s not original.»

If Windows 7 cannot be activated with Microsoft, Windows will frequently return the desktop background to a blank black image. In this case, you’ll also see the message «This copy of Windows is not genuine» on the black wallpaper in the lower-right corner of the screen, above the taskbar notification area.
