Double-clicking is the standard way to open a desktop icon in Windows. It is meant to prevent «accidental opening». However, some people may want to access files and applications with a single click. If you are among them, here’s how to change these settings.

To change the default value for opening files and folders from a double-click to a single click, go to the Start menu. Find «File Explorer» and then click it when it appears or press Enter.
In the window, go to View> Options> Change Folder and Search Options.
In the pop-up window, select the radio button «One click to open the item (point to select)».
After selecting this option, the icons will be underlined (as a hyperlink) when you hover over them. If you want the icon titles to be underlined all the time, select the «Underline icon titles in accordance with my browser» radio button.
Now that you’ve enabled this setting, if you ever want to select an icon without opening it, simply hover your mouse over it for a moment.
You can also tell Windows to place a check box above each item to allow you to select it. To enable this option, click the «View» tab in the «Folder Options» pop-up window and scroll down to «Advanced Settings.» Click the checkbox next to «Use checkboxes to select items,» then click «OK.»
