How to change the mouse cursor theme in Windows 10

Windows 10 lets you customize your mouse cursor beyond changing its color and size makes it easier to see. You can customize the theme of the indicator or even download and install the cursor schemes, as you would in previous versions of Windows.

Change the default cursor layout

Windows has several built-in cursor schemes that allow you to change the default appearance of the mouse pointer. This method will change the color (white, black or inverted) and size (default, large or extra large).

To get started, open the Settings app by pressing Windows + I on your keyboard and click «Devices» from the available options.

Click

Click «Mouse» in the left pane, scroll through the options until you see «Additional Mouse Options,» and click it.

Click "Mouse" and then "Additional Mouse Options" to open Mouse Properties.

Click the tab labeled «Pointers.»

Click the "Pointers" tab.

Click the drop-down menu and select a scheme that works for you. Click ‘Apply’ to save your changes and test your chosen style.

Click the drop-down menu to see a list of available schemes.

Windows 10 also has a built-in way to change the color and size of the mouse pointer. You can change them in the Settings application without changing any of the theme options in the Mouse Properties window.

Create a custom cursor scheme

If you like most, but not all, a scheme that Windows uses, you can change individual cursors into a scheme. Each scheme has 17 sliders that are applied to actions from different circumstances, hovering over things on the screen. After customizing a scheme to your liking, you can save it in the list of usable schemes.

Open the Settings app by pressing Windows + I on the keyboard and click «Devices» from the available options.

Now, from the list of cursors in the Customization section, click the one you want to change, then click «Browse.»

Click a cursor, and then click "Browse" to change it.

The file explorer will open in the system folder that contains all the available cursors for each schema. Inside the folder, you will see two types of files that belong to the mouse pointers; are .cur and .ani files. The first is a still image of the cursor, and the second is an animated image of the cursor. Most sliders are static sliders, with only a few that are actually animated (aero_busy and aero_working).

There are two types of image files for cursors: .cur and .years.

Click the cursor you want to replace and click «Open» when you’re done.

Click one of the files in the browser explorer.

Repeat the process for each cursor you want to change. When you’re ready, click «Save As,» name this custom setting, and then click «OK» to save your sketch.

Click "Save As", give the schema a name, and then click "OK" to save it in the preset list.

When you’re done, click «Apply» to save the cursor settings to your system so you can start using them.

Click "Apply" to set the current preset scheme on your system.

Download and install custom cursor themed packages

If the few options available aren’t enough, you can download a third-party cursor theme package to install on Windows. Cursors are easy to set up and give your system a personal style; you simply will not get the default black or white outlines.

RealWorld Designers Open Cursor Library It has thousands of free cursor themes to choose from and is a great place to start if you want to customize your Windows mouse cursors.

Since there is no official Microsoft channel for downloading cursors, you should scan everything you download with the antivirus and be careful to download anything from unknown sources.

After downloading a cursor theme package, unzip the contents to a folder so that you can access it in the next step.

Note: A custom cursor theme package will generally be a ZIP file and contains only the two types of image files I mentioned earlier: .cur and .ani.

Open the Settings app by pressing Windows + I on the keyboard and click «Devices» from the available options.

Click

Click «Mouse» in the left pane, scroll through the options until you see «Additional Mouse Options,» and click it.

Click "Mouse" and then "Additional Mouse Options" to open Mouse Properties.

After changing each cursor, save it as a preset in case you want to change it in the future.

Now, if you want to switch between themes, you can select it from the preset schemes in the drop-down menu.

Each preset scheme can be found in the drop-down list in the Scheme section.

When you have finished saving the scheme, click «Apply» to start using it and you can safely close the window or add another to the list.
